Properties:
Fortekor
is indicated for the treatment of heart failure in dogs and chronic renal insufficiency in cats. The active ingredient is benazepril. After oral administration, benazepril is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and hydrolysed to benazeprilat, a potent and specific inhibitor of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Fortekor produces significant plasma ACE inhibition over 24 hours after a single dose. Inhibition of ACE reduces the conversion of inactive angiotensin I andiotensina II active and therefore decreases the effects mediated by the angiotensin II, including arterial and venous vasoconstriction and retention of sodium and water by the kidneys. In dogs with heart failure, Fortekor reduces pressure and volume load on the heart.

Fortekor produces a significant increase in life expectancy of dogs with heart failure and also improves clinical signs, especially coughing, and quality of life. In contrast to most of the ACE inhibitors, benazeprilat is excreted equivalent gall and kidney, so it is not necessary to adjust the dose in patients with renal insufficiency.

Target species
Dogs and cats.

Side Effects
Fortekor is well tolerated. Some dogs may exhibit transient signs of fatigue.

Precautions
The excretion of approximately 50% of benazepril biliary determines a low risk of bioaccumulation in dogs with impaired renal function. However, as usual, is recommended to monitor plasma concentrations of urea and creatinine.

Warning
Do not treat females during gestation and lactation.

Interactions
No known in dogs. Interaction could occur with potassium retaining diuretics (e.g. spironolactone).

Overdose
The safety margin is about 60 times the recommended dose when used for a year. The product is, therefore, a wide safety margin for continued use. A dose of 100 mg / kg as a single dose (400 times the recommended minimum dose), no clinical signs of toxicity. In case of accidental overdose may appear transient and reversible signs of hypotension, the treatment is symptomatic and involves the intravenous administration of isotonic saline.
